PORCA Trails Funding Update — Fall 2021

PORCA Trail Funding Update Fall 2021

PORCA acknowledges that we operate and reside on unceded Lil’wat territory, as do all the trails we recreate on.

As the biking season starts to wind down in Pemberton, trail funding opportunities made possible by PORCA members, sponsors and Trailforks karma donations have allowed fall trail maintenance to occur on our favourite community trails.

Fat Tug was given some well deserved love in September and October with Jeff Westlake the original builder being funded to perform 40 hours of trail work on the climb and descent trail above the water tower. Jeff spent time armoring erosion susceptible areas, filling holes and reestablishing the trail surface.  Anybody who has recently ridden the popular trail has bound to have noticed the hardwork Jeff has put in.

Pacific Downhill also received some maintenance in September with Ed Witwicki the original builder being funded for 25 hours of trail work on the descent trail behind Creekside. Ed rebuilt berms, did soil work on all the jumps and landings and his work has revitalized the trail. If you haven't checked it out go ride it still has all the bigger jumps with a tight salom feel and will be a trail to ride before the snow comes.

Live Like Lisa was also given trail maintenance funding after a hot and dry summer. The trail is a gem with its backcountry feel and 42 hours was funded by PORCA and big thank you goes out to the PVTA who also funded 42 hours of work for a total of 84 hours of funded professional trail maintenance performed on the trail. Pembertons own Trail Manager Darren Niccoll along with help from WORCA trail team member Liam armoured key trail areas with rock and performed soil work to reestablish berms. A big shout out also goes to the Free Radicals who also volunteered their time to help with the work and Natalie Langman and Abi Goyan for volunteering to help Darren with rock work below. The trail should settle in nicely over winter and should be good to go by spring.

Thank you to all PORCA members and contributors that helped fund these trail maintenance activities.  If you have any feedback for trail maintenance projects please contact us with suggestions.

Trail Event Activities

PVTA and PORCA held a volunteer trails day on September 25th to raise the waterworld bridge near happy trail.  Thank you to all that helped! A special shout-out to Darren Niccoll, Emily Slaco and Luke de Jager for the organization and instruction on the day, as well as PORCA board member Michael Ruhr. Participants  helped place and construct rock basket abutments and stringers to keep feet dry this fall.

PVTA and PORCA sponsored by Sweet Skills also held a ladies dig day on October 2nd with Darren Nicoll providing guidance on trail building techniques for berm construction on Cross Town Traffic. Thank you to everyone that came out including PORCA board members Emma Mostrom-Mombelli, Natalie Langmann and Youth Program Coach Lizzie Darke.

Finally, thank you to all PORCA PNAR participants that earned their extra points by placing the rock at the bottom of Happy Trail in the puddle areas and for all the trail maintenance volunteer hours that occur by the community under the radar. It really does take a village to keep this amazing community trail network going!!
