Upper PHD Trail Work Report

Upper PHD is a gem in our trail network. Any trail well-loved like this one will naturally see increased traffic, and with more users, remediation work eventually becomes necessary. It was time for Upper PHD to receive some much-needed attention, and Scott Veach (@dirtshifter) stepped up to the task. You might recognize the name, he’s been an instrumental part of creating some of the sea-to-sky’s most iconic trails. You can learn more about that here. Now onto the trail work.

The Restoration Effort

Working from the bottom of the trail up and addressing problem areas along the way, Scott followed directions from Ian Kruger, (Director of Trails) and ensured that best practices were implemented.

Here's a detailed look at the work completed:

Removed snag blocking the line exit: This crucial step cleared the path, making the trail safer and more enjoyable for all users.

Removed all blowdowns: Clearing fallen trees and debris ensures a smooth and uninterrupted ride.

Armoured the lower waterfall slab line, improved the entrance, and removed the exit stump: These enhancements provide a more stable and navigable surface, reducing the risk of accidents.

Repaired the entrance to the mid-slab line: Fixing the entrance improves the flow and accessibility of the trail.

Improved trench depth and enhanced the ride line with armouring on several sections: These measures help manage water runoff and prevent erosion, ensuring the trail remains in top condition.

Added rock armour to the shoulder of the left line on the third slab option: This prevents riders from veering off-trail into a tree that was clipping bars, enhancing safety.

Repaired bomb holes on upper rock rolls with extensive rock work: This ensures longevity and maintains the trail's integrity.

Why It Matters

We believe it's important to share the efforts that go into keeping our trail network in top condition for all users. Regular maintenance like this not only preserves the quality of our trails but also enhances the overall riding experience.
